FreshFocus
One clear number to evaluate transition-cow performance
What Is FreshFocus?
Fresh Cow Index (FCI), a new metric within the HerdHQ platform, is featured in FreshFocus transition cow reports inside DairyDepot. FCI combines 25 individual cow variables from DHIA test-day data and CDCB genetic evaluations into a single, easy-to-understand score for evaluating transition cow performance.
A score of 100 indicates expected performance — cows above 100 are outperforming predictions, while those below 100 are more likely to underperform and face early culling risk. Producers and consultants can use FCI to evaluate month-over-month changes in feeding and management, understand herd-level transition success, and drill down into CowCompass for detailed, cow-level insights.

3+ Million Cows
Developed with University of Florida researchers using DRMS data
Proven Impact
Fresh Cow Index was developed with University of Florida researchers using DRMS data from more than 3 million cow records. Research showed cows with higher FCI scores had lower culling rates, higher peak milk production, and higher 305-day energy-corrected milk yields.
| First Lactation Cows | Second and Greater Lactation Cows |
|---|---|
| Culling: 26.7% → 23.2% | Culling: 37.7% → 33.1% |
| Peak Milk: 69 → 94 lbs. | Peak Milk: 91 → 130 lbs. |
| 305-Day ECM: 20,454 → 27,045 lbs. | 305-Day ECM: 23,311 → 31,962 lbs. |
